Domain name

The domain name is part of the address that the user writes in the navigation bar to access a website. For example, in the case of the https://www.wpdefinition.com address, the domain name is wpdefinition.com. It represents the identity of the site that the user is visiting.

Since the Internet is a vast network of computers that communicate with each other, each computer is identified by a unique IP address. However, remembering a series of numbers as an IP address can be inconvenient and challenging when trying to access a server.

Suppose you are browsing your social networks, and you have to memorize a series of numbers, such as 176.13.69.63, to access Facebook, 199.16.156.0 to access your Twitter account, and so on. That’s why domain names exist. A domain name is registered with a DNS (Domain Name System), which is a global network of web servers.

When you enter an address in your browser, your browser sends the query to the DNS to find which server to connect to. The DNS then identifies the IP address to which the domain name belongs and redirects your browser to this IP address, allowing the connection to the server.

With the same objective of offering the user a pleasant and easy-to-use browsing experience, it is important to have a relevant domain name. It just makes sense; Domain names were invented so that users could remember and access content that interested them more easily.

It is optimal to use a domain name that is short, relevant to your site, and easy to remember. For example, “wpdefinition” allows any user, particularly those less familiar with WordPress, to identify that the site likely pertains to a glossary of definitions for WordPress. Additionally, the name is much easier to remember and understand compared to a name like “glossaire-de-definitions-pour-votre-site-wordpress.com.”

Your domain name is an essential aspect of your WordPress site, and special attention should be paid to it when developing your web strategy. To help you choose a name and check if it is available, it is recommended to refer to a domain name provider.
