Core

An installation of WordPress, regardless of themes and plugins, constitutes the core of WordPress and is usually referred to as the core. The core enables the management of the administration section of WordPress, the display of the theme, and the integration of plugins.

The core makes it possible to:

 • Log in to your user account;
 • Manage your users’ accounts;
 • Create pages and articles;
 • Manipulate the media on your site;
 • Manage comments
 • Add plugins to modify the behavior of your site;
 • Control the display of your site;
 • And more!

Generally, the files and folders that reside at the root of your site are core files, with the exception of the
wp-config.php file
(which contains configurations for your installation) and the
wp-content
folder (which holds content files).

As a WordPress user, it is not desirable to modify the core files of WordPress. Instead, it is necessary to utilize the plugin principle to alter the behavior of WordPress.
